Why is malaria during pregnancy important?
Each year, more than 30 million women in Africa become pregnant in malaria-endemic areas. In these areas, malaria accounts for significant morbidity in pregnant
women and their newborns. For example, it accounts for 2–15% of maternal anemia and 5–14% of low birth weight.
Malaria also accounts for between 3–5% of all newborn deaths.
This tutorial discusses the impact of malaria on the
pregnant woman and her newborn and other important issues
concerning the prevention and control of malaria during pregnancy.
JHPIEGO is developing education and training programs that help prepare health professionals to meet these and other clinical care needs.
