Maternal and Neonatal Health

Through research, the Child Health Research (CHR) Project of the United States Agency for International Development  identifies and evaluates new technologies for improving case management and prevention of disease; strengthens the problem-solving capacity of developing country institutions, and guides improvements in national health policies and professional practice. 

The CHR website includes information on recent study findings and child health issues. It also includes a description of ongoing research and the expected outcome of that research.

A number of full-text special reports are available including "Reducing Perinatal and Neonatal Mortality," a report that summarizes the proceedings of an international conference held in May 1999 at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. 

Reproductive Health

Commercial Market Strategies (CMS) is a USAID-funded project. CMS works in developing countries to expand the role of the private sector in the delivery of quality reproductive healthcare.

This website provides information about many aspects of emergency contraception: prototype materials for health care providers, decision-makers, and clients; advice on developing local Emergency Contraception programs; talking points for use in media interviews; and references, links to other EC sites, and consortium information.

Under a Cooperative Agreement with the USAID, CONRAD has as its primary objective the development of new or improved contraceptive methods that are safe, effective, acceptable, and suitable for use in the US and developing countries. Currently, ReproLine has excerpts of the 1998-99 CONRAD Biannual Report online which summarizes CONRAD's research in this area. The CONRAD website provides information about applying for CONRAD grants.

The DELIVER project helps developing countries establish effective and efficient supply chains for public health and family planning programs. Our motto-No Product, No Program-is a reminder that health programs cannot operate successfully without a continuous, reliable flow of essential commodities. Well-functioning supply chains are critical to the realization of commodity security, which exists when every person is able to choose, obtain, and use essential health commodities whenever they are needed. Begun in 2000, DELIVER is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is managed by John Snow, Inc. (JSI).

The POP/RH Portal, an Internet initiative focusing on population and reproductive health, provides a community-built database of shared population information, including data, research, projects, ideas and dialogue. The Portal was developed by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Development Gateway Foundation, in collaboration with 14 partner institutions from the population community, linking it to resources on their websites and to those of other population and development organizations.

The Global Reproductive Health Forum @ Harvard (GRHF), hosted by Harvard University's School of Public Health, is a web-networking project that aims to encourage the proliferation of critical, democratic discussions about reproductive health, rights and gender on the net. This website provides interactive electronic forums to encourage discussion. The site also has links to information about reproductive health, gender and reproductive rights. Some content is available in Spanish and French.

The Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University Medical Center conducts research, advances scientific information, and provides policy support in Natural Family Planning and Fertility Awareness. The Institute is a technical resource for policy planners, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, service providers, researchers, educators, and community-based program managers.

IPPF is the largest voluntary organization in the field of sexual and reproductive health including family planning, with representation in over 150 countries worldwide. This website includes background information on IPPF and its programs as well as contact information for IPPF regional offices. One of the most useful items is the online "IPPF Medical Bulletin" which provides up-to-date and unbiased information on clinical, service delivery and managerial aspects in family planning and sexual and reproductive health.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Women's Health Information Center is designed as a resource for physicians and other health professionals. The site is produced and maintained by JAMA editors and staff under the direction of an editorial review board of leading Women's Health authorities. This section includes top stories and in-depth special reports, a library of the latest from the literature, and special information sections on STDs and contraception. Material is peer reviewed, and you can register to receive updates by e-mail.

A physician reviewed service offering medical professionals, women and industry a home for publishing, accessing information and global interaction. This site offers three sections, each focusing on different segments of the women's health community: Medical Professionals, Medical Industry and Women.  The Spanish and Portuguese version of OBGYN-Net, OBGYN.net Latina is not just a translation of the original English site, but has been developed specifically for Latin America. OBGYN.net Latina highlights events in the Latin America region and in Spain. Experts are from leading hospitals and universities in the region.

This website serves to inform colleagues about activities related to postabortion care (PAC), to exchange technical information, and to mobilize resources for PAC programming. The site includes basic information about the PAC Consortium, news about recent events, resources related to postabortion care, and information about PAC Consortium Task Forces. The PAC Consortium's newsletter, "PAC in Action", is also available on the website. The website is sponsored by the CATALYST Consortium with funding from USAID.

Published by Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), the RHO (Reproductive Health Outlook) website provides summaries of up-to-date information, links to in-depth reproductive health information on the web, and the chance to communicate with international experts and peers through Community Forum message boards. RHO is especially designed for reproductive health program managers and decision makers working in low-resource settings.

General Medical Resources

Full-Text Library features hundreds of biological and medical publications. Abstracts (and some articles) are free. HMS Beagle is award-winning magazine of science news and features, and links to useful sites. Job Exchange includes hundreds of job listings and career resources from around the world. Other Features includes special offers, hot papers, Web Picks and featured books. Membership is free.

Contains the full text of all articles published in the weekly BMJ from January 1995.

The Lancet Interactive is the worldwide web version of a leading independent medical journal. The site is intended as a service to the journal's readers and is updated weekly. Subscribers to the printed Lancet can view the complete contents of the journal. Non-subscribers can register online, without charge, to view selected items from the journal.

National Library of Medicine's search service to access the 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases.

Begun as the Laboratory of Hygiene in 1887, today, the National Institutes of Health is one of the world's foremost biomedical research centers, and the Federal focal point for biomedical research in the US. The NIH website includes background about the NIH, news, health information, funding opportunities, scientific resources, and listings of the NIH institutes and offices. The website also has a Spanish version.

WHO proposes conventions, agreements, regulations and makes recommendations about international nomenclature of diseases, causes of death and public health practices. It develops, establishes and promotes international standards concerning foods and biological, pharmaceutical and similar substances. The WHO website includes articles and reference material on a wide variety of health topics.

Training and Performance Improvement

Founded in 1944, ASTD represents more than 70,000 members in the field of workplace learning and performance, who come from every area of the growing industry and from more than 150 countries across the globe. The ASTD website is a good resource for general training information.

The International Society for Performance Improvement represents more than 10,000 international and chapter members throughout the United States, Canada, and 40 other countries. ISPI's mission is to improve the performance of individuals and organizations through the application of Human Performance Technology. 

  • Teaching Aids at Low Cost (TALC)

    TALC is a registered charity, based in the United Kingdom, which supplies teaching aids and books to raise standards of healthcare worldwide. TALC is professionally advised by the Centre for International Child Health, Institute of Child Health, University of London. TALC materials encompass a wide range of health topics including family planning, HIV/AIDS, and maternal and child health. Books include guides for health professionals as well as publications for children and young people.

The Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) is a women-focused nonprofit international organization founded in 1975 and based in Washington, DC. CEDPA’s mission is to empower women at all levels of society to be full partners in development. Their website will give you insight into their training activities and other programs as well as a list of their publications.

The Contraceptive Research and Development (CONRAD) Program, under a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development, has as its primary objective the development of new or improved contraceptive methods that are safe, effective, acceptable, and suitable for use in the US and developing countries.

EngenderHealth (formerly AVSC International) works in international family planning and related areas such as maternal and child health, postabortion care, STI/HIV services, quality improvement, infection protection, and men as partners.

Family Health International (FHI) is a not-for profit organization committed to helping women and men have access to safe, effective, acceptable and affordable family planning methods; preventing the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs); and improving the health of women and children. Their website includes sections on Family Planning, HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Women's Studies, FHI General Information, and FHI Publications. Of particular interest is the FHI publication "Network" which is available in full text in English, Spanish and French.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) links national autonomous Family Planning Associations in over 150 countries worldwide. IPPF and its member associations promote the right of women and men to decide freely the number and spacing of their children and the right to the highest possible level of sexual and reproductive health.

INTRAH, a program of the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, provides training system development assistance to health agencies in developing countries worldwide.

JHPIEGO Corporation, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University and publisher of ReproLine, works to improve the lives of women and their families worldwide. The website describes their programs in training in reproductive health, maternal and neonatal health, Santé Familiale et Prévention du SIDA and cervical cancer prevention. It also includes an order form for learning materials and technical report summaries.

The Center for Communication Programs is part of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. The Center works with many international agencies, foundations, governments, and nongovernmental organizations in the US and overseas to promote healthy behavior through information, education and communication activities. Highlights of this website are ImageBase, a collection of over 450 posters and other images, POPINFORM, the most recent installment of POPLINE (up to 6000 new records), and Net Links, over 900 Internet resources in population, health and development.

Hosted by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), this website offers technical information, country health profiles and publications that are useful to the reproductive health professional. In addition, the site provides online abstracts from PAHO's Pan American Journal of Public Health as well as full-text articles from Perspectivas de Salud and informative news releases.

PATH is an international, non-profit organization whose mission is to improve health, especially the health of women and children. PATH programs address a wide variety of topic areas including child and maternal health, reproductive health and family planning, communicable diseases, and financing. A highlight of the website is a collection of case studies that illustrate PATH’s work.

Pathfinder International is a nonprofit organization that works with institutions worldwide to create and improve access to quality reproductive health information and services. Their website includes downloadable training modules on topics such as training modules cover such as family planning methods, infection prevention, reproductive tract infections, counseling and training of trainers.

Population Action International is dedicated to advancing policies and programs that slow population growth in order to enhance the quality of life for all people. PAI advocates the expansion of voluntary family planning, other reproductive health services, and educational and economic opportunities for girls and women.

The Population Council is an international, nonprofit institution that conducts research on three fronts: biomedical, social science, and public health. Their website contains

UNDP's mission is to help countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable human development in the areas of poverty, environment, gender, and governance.

UNFPA extends assistance to developing countries, countries with economies in transition and other countries at their request to help them address reproductive health and population issues, and raises awareness of these issues in all countries. UNFPA's three main areas of work are: to help ensure universal access to reproductive health, including family planning and sexual health, to all couples and individuals on or before the year 2015; to support population and development strategies that enable capacity-building in population programming; to promote awareness of population and development issues and to advocate for the mobilization of the resources and political will necessary to accomplish its areas of work.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is the independent government agency that provides economic development and humanitarian assistance.

The U.S. Committee builds awareness and support for the work of the United Nations Population Fund, which provides essential family planning education and services, supports programs that reduce discrimination and expand opportunities for women, and assists governments in developing population policies and programs that improve the lives of all citizens. Their website features international news stories on reproductive health, gender equity, violence, adolescents and HIV/AIDS.

The World Bank Group is made up of five international entities which offer loans, advice, and an array of customized resources to more than 100 developing countries and countries in transition.
