Those responsible for planning and programming training interventions will need to be familiar with the strategies presented in this guide. In addition, those with programming responsibilities will need to consider the following suggestions in order to ensure transfer of learning strategies are effective.

  • Orient key stakeholders to transfer of learning stressing that use of these strategies will help to ensure that investments in training result in improved job performance and quality services.
  • Plan and budget for communications (before and after training) with the supervisors of those being trained.
  • Orient trainers to transfer of learning strategies.
  • Orient supervisors to transfer of learning strategies.
  • Plan and budget for trainer followup visits as soon after training as possible. Note that depending on the number of individuals attending training courses, other trainers or subject matter experts may need to be prepared to conduct followup visits.
  • Provide copies of the guide and blank action planning forms to trainers along with their course materials.
  • Add an introduction to transfer of learning strategies to train-the-trainer courses.
  • Plan how to apply transfer of learning strategies to all training interventions (e.g., courses, workshops, seminars).
