Performance Improvement at JHPIEGO

Current PI Initiatives at JHPIEGO | PI Strategy | Defining and Strengthening the MAQ/PI Relationship at JHPIEGO

Why Performance Improvement Is Important for Us at JHPIEGO

Over the years at JHPIEGO, we have moved beyond training to improve the performance of healthcare providers at the national and service delivery levels. The performance improvement process allows us to explore additional areas that are peripheral to training, but which have a direct impact on training effectiveness. Performance improvement encourages us to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new ones in areas where we do not have in-depth experience.

In adopting a performance improvement approach at JHPIEGO, we will:

Use the performance improvement process to guide program development. We will facilitate the analysis of performance problems by using the performance improvement process with appropriate stakeholders. Our experienced program development staff will facilitate the process, thus assuring a seamless transition from analysis to intervention selection to implementation and finally to monitoring and evaluation. Using the performance improvement approach does not mean that JHPIEGO will implement all selected interventions; rather, we will make ourselves available to help identify appropriate interventions and resources.

Emphasize transfer of training to make sure that what is learned is applied in the workplace. We will focus on what happens before and after training. For example, we will:

  • Ensure appropriate selection of training participants

  • Involve the site supervisor in training plans

  • Clearly communicate training objectives to prospective participants and supervisors prior to training

  • Facilitate followup visits by trainers

  • Link the training and supervision systems

  • Enhance the ability of supervision systems to integrate newly acquired skills and knowledge

Seek more collaborative relationships with complementary partners so that performance factors are not addressed in isolation. Addressing performance factors simultaneously through partnerships will greatly increase the chances for measurable and sustainable improvements in the delivery of reproductive health services. Performance factors to be addressed include:

  • Job expectations
  • Performance feedback
  • Motivation
  • Management systems and leadership
  • Knowledge and skills
  • Facilities, equipment and supplies
  • Client and community focus

Expanding Our Vision

  • With its emphasis on the transfer of training, performance improvement can help us protect our past, current and future investments in training.
  • The root cause analysis of performance gaps encourages us to examine, realistically, what can be achieved and helps us target resources efficiently and effectively.
  • The performance improvement process helps us focus on results and accomplishments.
  • Because performance improvement is holistic and systemic in nature, it encourages us to collaborate with other organizations and gives us the opportunity to achieve a greater impact.
  • Improved performance of healthcare providers leads us to our ultimate goal: better quality of healthcare services.
