Female Sterilization

Q.10. What is the appropriate follow-up schedule after female sterilization?

Recommendations

Rationale

One follow-up visit seven days following sterilization or within 14 days is strongly recommended to check on the healing of the wound and to remove any sutures.

The woman should be encouraged to come back promptly if she has any problems (such as fever, pain, bleeding, or pus) or at any time if she has questions or concerns.

The follow-up examination should take place between seven and 14 days after surgery. If nonabsorbable sutures were used, removal after seven days increases the risk of infection.

There is no medical benefit to routine long term follow-up, although women should be encouraged to seek medical care for general health reasons. In addition, women should receive counseling on warning signs that would necessitate a return to the provider.
