Combined Injectable Contraceptives

Q.2. In what site(s) can the injection of CICs be safely given?

Recommendations

Rationale

Both the arm (deltoid) and the gluteal muscle are acceptable. The choice should be made by client preference. Injection should be deep intramuscular and should not be massaged. The deltoid generally has greater acceptability and easier access for service providers.

Massaging at the site of injection is not recommended because massaging increases immediate absorption.
