Healthcare workers are at risk of exposure to serious, potentially life-threatening infections unless precautions are taken to prevent infection. The purpose of this manual is to assist healthcare workers and hospital and clinic supervisors, managers and administrators understand the basic principles of infection prevention and recommended processes and practices.

This World Health Organization document provides selected practice recommendations based on the best available evidence and is intended to be used by policy-makers, programme managers, and the scientific community. It aims to provide guidance to national family planning/reproductive health programmes in the preparation of guidelines for service delivery of contraceptives.

In 1994 USAID convened a group of experts that reviewed the current literature on 4 contraceptive methods and developed guidelines for use based on the scientific data. In 1997 the group published a second volume which covered all other commonly available contraceptive methods.
