The Jamaica Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Program, which JHPIEGO's Training in Reproductive Health Project began in December 2001, has exceeded its goal of developing a network of more than 300 VCT service providers and 16 qualified VCT trainers in that country. The goal of VCT is detection of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections. To date, the program has developed 316 VCT providers and 30 VCT trainers.
As a result of this TRH initiative VCT providers are now available in all 13 parishes on the island, and VCT trainers are available in each of the four Regional Health Authorities (RHAs). VCT providers include staff from the Jamaican Ministry of Health and RHAs, as well as key NGOs throughout Jamaica. Under TRH, the program has now expanded to four Eastern Caribbean countries: Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Lucia, as well as Guyana and Suriname on the South American coast and have already trained 18 trainers from four countries.
