Clinical Update: Contraceptive Pearl
(March 2002)

Contraception in Pakistan

Question: According to the 2000-2001 RH/FP survey, what is the most commonly used method of contraception for women 15-49 in Pakistan?

Answer: Female sterilization--6.9% of married women or ¼ of contraceptive use. Thus, this finding runs counter to the misconception that sterilization is not popular in Muslim countries. Overall CPR in Pakistan is 27.6% with 23.9% modern. Prevalence has grown steadily in the decade since 1990-91 when overall prevalence was 11.8%.
