Tour of clinic facilities

Demonstration: Talking with patients

Demonstration: Standard MVA procedure method with patients

Clinic Practice: Divide into three groups (counselors and two groups of clinicians)

Counselors: Practice talking with patients using volunteers/patients

Clinician Groups 1 and 2: Groups alternate seeing patients.

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Warmup

Lecture/Discussion: Pain management for the MVA procedure

Demonstration/Exercise: Paracervical block

Clinic Practice:

Provide postabortion care in the clinic including:

  • Initial assessment
  • Assessment and treatment of complications
  • Pain management
  • MVA procedure

Counselors/Clinicians: Practice talking with patients

Clinician Groups 1 and 2: Groups alternate seeing patients.

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Precourse Assessment:

Assess each participant's skills:

  • Counseling (role play)
  • Pelvic exam (pelvic models)

Demonstration/Exercise: Assemble and prepare MVA equipment

Demonstration: Performing the MVA Procedure

Exercise: How to use the Learning Guides for Postabortion Care Clinical Skills and Family Planning Counseling Skills

Classroom Practice: Divide into groups to practice on pelvic model.

Clinicians: MVA procedure

Counselors: Talking with patients about the MVA procedure

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Review of the day's activities

1300-1630

Classroom Practice:

  • Initial assessment of MVA patients
  • Differential diagnosis of vaginal bleeding
  • Principles of emergency postabortion care

Role Play: Verbacaine

Classroom Practice: Divide into teams to practice verbacaine and MVA procedure on pelvic models.

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Review of the day's activities

Clinical Conference

Exercise: Strengthening interpersonal skills

Discussion: PAC family planning counseling

Lecture/Discussion: Postabortion contraception

Role Play: Counseling for postabortion care procedure and family planning

Assignment: Postabortion Care: A Reference Manual for Improving Quality of Care, Chapters 1, 2, 3, 6 and Appendices B and I Assignment: Chapters 5, 6, 9 and Appendices E, G, H and I Assignment: Chapters 4, 8 and Appendices D and F

Discussion/ Videotape/Demonstration: Role of infection prevention (IP) practices in postabortion care services.

  • Definitions
  • Handwashing and use of gloves
  • Processing instruments
  • Waste disposal

Demonstration: In simulated clinical area, use the learning guide while demonstrating infection prevention practices for each step of postabortion care.

Midcourse Questionnaire

Review of the day's activities

Discussion:

  • Establishing/organizing and managing postabortion care services
  • Linkages to other reproductive health services
  • Maximizing access to MVA services
  • Policy issues
  • Problems and constraints to postabortion care service delivery in participant's clinical setting

Discussion: Assessing and improving quality of postabortion care services

Closing

  • Review course accomplishments relative to objectives, training methods and materials
