Discussion: Key features of Norplant Implants

Demonstration: Standard Norplant implants insertion method using training slides and training arm model

Exercise: How to Use the Learning Guide for Norplant Implants Clinical Skills

Review day's scheduled activities

Participants demonstrate competency in counseling (counselors) or Norplant implants insertion using the training arm (clinicians)

Demonstration (trainer): Norplant implants insertion with a client

Clinical Conference: Review demonstration by trainer, IP procedures, followup instructions with clients

Clinic Practice: Divide into teams of two:

Counselors: Perform method-specific counseling and client instructions following insertion or removal

Clinicians: Perform Norplant implants insertion with clients

Competency-based evaluation by trainer using checklist

Review day's scheduled activities

Participants demonstrate competency in counseling (counselors) or Norplant implants removal using the training arm (clinician)

Demonstration (trainer): Norplant implants removal with a client

Clinical Conference: Review demonstration by trainer, IP procedures, difficult removals and postremoval instructions with clients

Clinic Practice: Divide into teams of two:

Counselors: Counsel and assess clients and assist in procedure area

Clinicians: Perform removal with clients

Competency-based evaluation by trainer using checklist

Discussion: Importance of counseling for family planning (FP) services

Role Play: Initial FP counseling

Demonstration: Effective counseling techniques

Exercise: How to Use the Learning Guide for Norplant Implants Counseling Skills

Classroom Practice: Divide into teams of two:

Counselors: Review clinic procedures, infection prevention procedures and practice counseling clients

Clinicians: Practice Norplant implants insertion on training arm model

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Review of the day's activities

Clinical Conference: Cases from clinic session

Demonstration: "U" and standard removal methods using training slides and training arm model

Participants follow using learning guide

Classroom Practice: Divide into teams of two:

Counselors: Role play method-specific counseling including client assessment and client instructions following insertion or removal

Clinicians: Practice Norplant implants removal on training arm model

Participants assess each other's performance using learning guides

Midcourse Questionnaire

Review of the day's activities

Clinical Conference: Cases from clinic session

Discussion: Review answers to Midcourse Questionnaire

Discussion: Trainer reviews clinical evaluations with participants individually

Discussion: Management of side effects and other problems
