As part of the MAQ initiative, JHPIEGO has produced a series of MAQ
Bulletins as followup to regional MAQ conferences and meetings held in
East and Southern Africa and in Francophone West Africa. The purpose of the MAQ Bulletins is
to document country achievements and share success stories related to the MAQ initiative,
to provide conference followup and evaluation information, to disseminate contraceptive
technology updates and news about international guidelines and standards and to publish
articles about successful reproductive health strategies that may serve as prototypes in
the African regions. MAQ Bulletins are distributed to regional MAQ delegates, representatives from USAID Cooperating Agencies, donor agencies
and other global MAQ champions.
Francophone Africa
In July 2000, an exciting new MAQ subcommittee was
launched in Dakar, Senegal. The Francophone MAQ Subcommittee is the first
subcommittee to the MAQ Steering Committee to be established in the field.
In February 2001, the first meeting of the Subcommittee’s Executive
Bureau was held to clarify roles and responsibilities of members and to
move ahead with the Subcommittee’s technical agenda. These issues of the
MAQ Bulletin are dedicated to supporting this fledgling MAQ subcommittee
and communicating information that is relevant to the MAQ initiative in
Francophone Africa.
From 1-4 March, 1999, the
Conference on Maximizing Access and Quality of Care (MAQ): Implementing
policies, norms and protocols in reproductive health services was held in Dakar, Senegal, to build upon the MAQ initiative
in the Francophone Africa region. This issue of the MAQ Bulletin is
intended to sustain the enthusiasm generated during the conference and to
encourage continued efforts to maximize access to and quality of
reproductive health services in the region.
The Francophone Africa Bulletin, which includes articles contributed by
INTRAH and FHI, is a followup activity to the Regional Conference on Increasing Access and
Improving the Quality of Family Planning and Selected Reproductive Health Services in
Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa, held in Ouagadougou, Burkina
Faso, from 12–17 March 1995.
East and Southern Africa
The East and Southern Africa MAQ Bulletin was produced in collaboration with the
HHRAA/SARA Project as a followup activity to the East and Southern Africa regional
workshop Improving Quality of Care and Access to Contraception: Reducing
Medical Barriers, held in Harare, Zimbabwe, from 30 January to 4 February
1994.
