Syllabus

Course Description

This course addresses the family planning and reproductive health needs of clients with HIV/AIDS in low-resource settings. The purpose of this course is to provide a foundation of knowledge about FP/RH and HIV/AIDS to help providers better meet the needs of people with HIV/AIDS in low-resource settings. The course will cover aspects of FP/RH healthcare for people with HIV, with a focus on solutions practical for low-resource settings while representing current scientific knowledge. Content will include non-clinical topics. The course includes pre- and post-tests, lessons comprising a lecture, learning exercise, and quiz, and a final course evaluation.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant will be familiar with:

  • Risk assessment and identification of HIV infection
  • Prevention of sexual transmission and acquisition of HIV
  • Dual protection and family planning methods 
  • Reproductive health issues such as cervical cancer, STIs and adolescent sexuality
  • Prevention of mother-to-child transmission
  • Standard precautions for infection prevention

Audience

This course is targeted to healthcare professionals including policymakers, managers, faculty, service providers and trainers in, but not limited to, the areas of HIV/AIDS, primary care, family planning, reproductive health, and maternal health. 

Instructors

Dr. Jean Anderson

Dr. Jean Anderson is a Technical Advisor for JHPIEGO’s HIV/AIDS Program and the Director of the Johns Hopkins HIV Women’s Health Program. She is an internationally renowned expert in the treatment of STI’s and HIV/AIDS. She has conducted research and training internationally and has numerous peer-reviewed publications involving state-of-the-art research and practices pertaining to voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. 

A Johns Hopkins Medical Faculty member since 1987, Dr. Anderson brings extensive expertise in the field of VCT, STI’s and HIV/AIDS, inclusive of education, training, counseling, treatment and infection prevention in healthcare settings. Dr. Anderson brings experience improving the quality of care for people with sexually transmitted infections. She has also worked to address and reduce the stigma surrounding people living with HIV. Her experience also includes making recommendations for improvements in clinical care settings, both operational and attitudinal. Dr. Anderson is frequently called upon, nationally and internationally, to provide expert guidance and assistance to governments, medical organizations / institutions and others seeking to develop or improve programs related to VCT, STI’s and HIV/AIDS.

Professor Emmanuel 'Dipo Otolorin

Dr. ‘Dipo Otolorin is the Medical Director of JHPIEGO’s HIV/AIDS Program. Prior to that, he was the Reproductive Health Advisor for the Regional Center for Quality Health Care in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Otolorin is an Ob/Gyn with over 20 years experience in clinical services and capacity building in reproductive health. He is a specialist in pre-service education and in-service training and has conducted activities such as designing of instructional content, developing training materials, and applying innovative training approaches including computer assisted learning among others. Other skills include quality improvement in clinical services, facilitative supervision, hospital management and administration, research and evaluation. His specific reproductive health interests include approaches to increasing access and quality of long term and permanent contraception, essential obstetric care, sexually transmitted infections, clinical care of women living with HIV/AIDS, control of malaria in pregnancy, infertility, adolescent sexuality and pregnancy as well as cervical and breast cancer screening all in the context of continuous quality improvement in low-resource settings.

Occasionally, the lecture will also include links to optional additional resources on the web that can be viewed by visiting the relevant web page. 

The learning exercises may comprise a case study, role play or interview followed by discussion questions.
