  1. A 21 year-old woman was found to be HIV-infected during her last pregnancy. She presents now with lower abdominal tenderness, cervical motion tenderness, and adnexal tenderness. Her temperature is 102 degrees F (39 degrees C) and she has a purulent discharge from the vagina.
    1. What is the most likely diagnosis?
    2. How is this illness likely to be affected by her HIV infection?
    3. What other reproductive issues does this raise, related both to her HIV infection and to this current illness? 
  2. As we have discussed, HIV has been associated with decreased fertility. 
    1. Can you think of potential reasons for this decrease? 
    2. How would you use this information to counsel men and women about HIV?
