Lesson 4: Counseling the HIV Positive Client About Family Planning
Instructor: Emmanuel 'Dipo Otolorin, MD

Learning Exercise

Try role-playing counseling with a colleague. You can play the role of the counselor while your colleague pretends to be the client. Tell your colleague to imagine the client’s character, his or her life situation and the decisions that he or she is facing. Then act out the counseling session. When you have finished, note down what went well and what did not.

If you do not have a colleague at your workplace that can role-play counseling with you, go to a family planning clinic near you and pretend to be a client (Mystery Client). At the end of your interaction with the FP provider, note down the following:

  • How were you treated?
  • How did you feel being asked intimate questions about your sexuality?
  • Did you receive enough information to make an informed decision about your preferred method?
  • Did you receive your method of choice?
