This table is a summary of thirteen studies that compared the complication rates associated with vacuum aspiration and sharp curettage. The studies reported on almost 100,000 vacuum aspiration procedures in in 11 countries. The complication rates that are listed are per 100 procedures performed. The last column in the table compares the number of studies that found fewer major complications with vacuum aspiration that with sharp curettage. For example, 10 of 13 studies found the rate of excess blood loss for vacuum aspiration was lower than or equal to that for sharp curettage. Some of the 13 studies did not evaluate all 4 major complications.
