Morbidity and mortality due to the consequences of unsafe abortion constitute a serious
health problem in many parts of the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa. Senior health
policymakers in East, Central and Southern Africa recognize abortion complications as an
important women's health issue in their region. In response to this, a two part study was
conducted to provide the policymakers with a multifaceted view of the problem based on,
up-to-date information from select service delivery sites (through primary data collection
in Malawi, Uganda and Zambia) and a literature review. The resulting publication,
Monograph on Complications of Unsafe Abortion in Africa, was published in August 1995, as
a collaborative effort among the Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat for
East, Central and Southern Africa, JHPIEGO, IPAS and the Academy for Educational
Development.
