This chart indicates when a breastfeeding woman can begin use of various contraceptive methods. Both the IUD and female voluntary sterilization can be provided during the first 48 hours after delivery. If not performed then, they should be delayed (IUDs for at least 4 weeks and voluntary sterilization for 6 weeks). Note: COC use can begin at 6 weeks if the woman is not breastfeeding because they will have no effect on the infant. They should, however, be delayed until then because of the pregnancy-induced risk of blood clotting problems.
