Voluntary Sterilization Overview Presentation Graphics Notes

Slide 8

Although sterilization is the most commonly used method of contraception worldwide, there is a lot of variation in prevalence rates by region. Currently its use is concentrated in Asia and Latin America. It is important to remember that unlike non-permanent contraceptive methods, sterilization prevalence rates are cumulative and reflect all past sterilizations.

These data from the 1982, 1988 and 1995 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) were collected from representative samples of women of reproductive age. In these years, the percentage of women using contraception increased from about 56% in 1982 to 60% in 1988 and to 64% in 1995 with most of the growth among condom users. The overall proportion of women using female sterilization did not change markedly from 1988 to1995.
