Combined Injectable Contraceptives
Presentation Graphics Notes

Slide 8

A woman who has had an ectopic pregnancy is at increased risk for another. She should use a very effective method of contraception. CICs are a particularly good choice because they block ovulation.

Slide 10

Prolonged bed rest increases the risk of venous blood clotting problems. CICs should be stopped for 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery.

Slide 11

CICs can be used by women with epilepsy or tuberculosis because the level of estrogen is more consistent and higher than with COCs. As a result, there is less of an impact of these medications on CICs.

Slide 13

Short-term studies have shown little clinical effect of CICs on blood pressure. There are, however, theoretical concerns, that CICs may effect blood pressure in the long-term.
