Workshop Proceedings and Conference Reports

Cervical Cancer | Maternal and Neonatal Health | Postabortion Care | Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Each year, JHPIEGO hosts a workshop to discuss a topic important to the area of family planning in developing countries.  The workshops bring subject matter experts together with reproductive health professionals from various priority countries and JHPIEGO programming staff.  Below are the proceedings from the 1994-1997 workshops.

Cervical Cancer

Every year, 500,000 women die from cervical cancer, 95% of them in developing countries. This section includes summaries of proceedings from two workshops on the topic held in 1997 and 2000.

MNH Workshop Report

On 13 and 14 September 2000, JHPIEGO/MNH sponsored a workshop to explore issues in implementing global maternal and neonatal health standards of care. The overall goal of the workshop was to finalize a strategy for promoting evidence-based maternal and neonatal health standards globally.

Postabortion Care

On 20 and 21 May 1999, JHPIEGO sponsored a workshop to explore issues in establishing postabortion care (PAC) in low-resource settings. The overall goal of the workshop was to reach agreement on a strategy for providing PAC services that could be adopted and implemented by organizations working in the PAC arena. This section includes an executive summary, the final strategy paper, individual presentations and recommendations.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Since the concept of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) was first described, the spectrum of diseases included in this category has expanded greatly. Currently, more than twenty microorganisms are known to be transmissible through sexual intercourse. The complications arising from STDs, from pelvic inflammatory disease in particular, present enormous public health problems. The workshop proceedings from 1995 explores options for introducing management of STDs into family planning programs.
