JHPIEGO Joins WHO and Partners in Egypt for Launch of Implementing Best Practices Consortium
(March 2002)

From 9-13 February, approximately 150 participants attended an Inter-Country Meeting with Partners and Country Teams at the Hotel Sofitel Le Sphinx in Giza, Egypt. Reproductive health professionals from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, West Bank-Gaza and Yemen formed country teams. Donors, representatives from international agencies, regional advisors and a delegation from the Ministry of Health, India, also took part in the meeting, which was held in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, Department of Women's and Reproductive Health (EMRO/WRH).

This event was a highly collaborative initiative in which JHPIEGO played a key role to assist WHO and partner agencies in launching a new global initiative called the Implementing Best Practices (IBP) Consortium. The IBP Consortium is a network of international partners that will provide information, support and mentoring to developing country programs so that they can adapt and apply internationally recognized best practices. IBP Consortium launching partners include: World Health Organization/Department of Reproductive Health and Research (WHO/RHR), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), EngenderHealth, Family Health International (FHI), International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), INTRAH/PRIME, JHPIEGO, Johns Hopkins University/Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP), Management Sciences for Health (MSH), Pathfinder, Population Leadership Program, UNFPA, Advance Africa and Catalyst Projects and Partners for Population and Development.

During the course of the meeting, JHPIEGO staff gave PowerPoint presentations on a variety of topics. JHPIEGO presentation topics included:

  • Dorothy Andere: Infection Prevention
  • Barbara Kinzie: Antenatal Care: Old Myths, New Realities; The Evidence Speaks Out: Normal Labor and Childbirth
  • Pamela Lynam: Self-Directed Learning, Standards and Guidelines
  • Ronald Magarick: Humanistic Training with Anatomic Models
  • Edgar Necochea: Supervision, Accreditation, Management and Leadership, Performance Improvement
  • Emmanuel Otolorin: Postabortion Care, Male and Female Sterilization, Update on Norplant
