Performance Improvement Workshop Conducted in Senegal
(October 2001)

From 11-20 September 2001, technical experts from JHPIEGO facilitated the first of two workshops designed to introduce a performance improvement approach to improving the quality of PAC services in Senegal.

Twelve PAC stakeholders, including PAC service providers, health center supervisors, and community representatives, participated in the workshop at the urban Roi Baudoin Health Center (RBHC) in Guédiawaye, Senegal. Although updated and well-detailed service delivery guidelines exist for PAC services in Senegal, they don't include the elements of "quality" that are outside of the scope of the clinical procedure itself. Defining desired performance for PAC services in Senegal included the traditional elements of PAC, plus standards for infrastructure, management, counseling, and accessibility. Participants worked together to define desired performance of PAC services and produce a comprehensive observation tool for conducting a performance analysis of PAC services at RBHC in October 2001. One of the primary successes of this workshop was the opportunity for these various stakeholders to sit together and come to consensus about what is the minimum required to provide high quality PAC services.

A followup workshop, designed to compare actual performance at RBHC to desired performance and examine root causes for performance gaps, will take place in November 2001.
