JHPIEGO has recently received funding from USAID and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HIV/AIDS
Bureau) of the Department of Health and Human Services to increase the longevity and improve the quality of life for
women living with HIV/AIDS. JHPIEGO's strategy focuses on the following:
- Development and dissemination of educational materials and information for
HIV-infected women, their support systems, and healthcare workers providing supportive care
- Skill building for service providers to enable them to both clinically manage women living with HIV/AIDS and to effectively communicate self-care and prevention practices to women and their support systems
- Promotion of behavior change in women and their support systems to increase longevity and quality of life of HIV
positive women
In the first year, the program will be implemented in one country and will involve:
- The development of presentation graphic sets and ReproLearn tutorials on:
- Epidemiology and Natural History of HIV/AIDS
- Prevention
- Voluntary Counseling and Testing
- Infection Prevention in Healthcare Workers
- Nutrition
- HIV in Pregnancy
- General Medical Care
- Palliative Care
- A country level HIV/AIDS needs assessment
- The formation of a country team to develop an action plan in response to the needs
assessment findings
- The revision and adaptation of draft materials
- An incountry technical update for key stakeholders and service providers using the completed educational materials
