Clinical Training Skills (CTS) Course Conducted in Zambia Using ModCal for CTS
(April 2001)

In Zambia, in April 2001, Rick Sullivan, Director of Learning and Performance Support Services at JHPIEGO and Dr. Machoki from Kenya trained the first group of Postabortion Care (PAC) on-the-job-training (OJT) trainers using ModCal (Modified Computer Assisted Learning) for CTS. Prior to the 4.5 days of the clinical skills practice portion of the course, the course participants were provided with the ModCal CTS materials and an introduction to using the CD-ROM. For approximately a month before the course was held, the participants worked through the computer modules. All 13 course participants completed the ModCal for CTS modules, scored at least 85% on the post?test and did excellent work on their classroom and clinical presentations.

A significant amount of time was spent working on how to use the PAC OJT learning package at the three pilot PAC OJT sites in Zambia. The National PAC coordinator participated and felt confident that the new trainers (about 3 per site) will begin training providers in a few weeks.

ModCal for Clinical Training Skills is a multimedia course on CD?ROM designed to help healthcare providers become more effective preservice faculty members or inservice trainers. The content of the modules is taken from the JHPIEGO Clinical Training Skills for Reproductive Health Professionals reference manual, 2nd edition. Candidate clinical trainers complete the ModCal instruction and then practice their newly acquired skills under the guidance of an advanced or master trainer.
