JHPIEGO's ModCal (Modified Computer-Assisted Learning) for
Clinical Training Skills (CTS) has taken top honors in the Spring 2000 Edition of the 42nd annual Cinema in Industry
competitions. The software received a gold International Cinema in Industry (CINDY)
award, placing in the top 15 percent of the Business, Industry and Government interactive
multimedia category.
JHPIEGO shares this honor with LearnWare® International Corporation, the designer of JHPIEGO's interactive
multimedia courseware, including ModCal for Clinical Training Skills and ModCal for IUD Services.
ModCal for Clinical Training Skills was designed to help healthcare providers become more effective preservice
faculty members or inservice trainers. The content of the modules is taken from the JHPIEGO Clinical Training Skills
for Reproductive Health Professionals reference manual, 2nd edition. Candidate clinical trainers
complete the ModCal instruction and then practice their newly acquired skills
under the guidance of an advanced or master trainer.
The CD-ROMs, ModCal for CTS and ModCal for IUD Services, combine the best aspects of
computer-assisted learning--flexibility, standardization and cost-effectiveness--with JHPIEGO's
competency-based learning approach. Interactive computer modules provide
self-paced or minimum-guidance learning that multiplies the effectiveness of existing staff, increases the efficiency of training and
delivers standardized, up-to-date information. The ModCal CD-ROM is intended for use with other learning materials
including the reference manual, trainer's notebook and participant's handbook.
In December, JHPIEGO conducted a CTS course at Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles, California, USA. The course
was the fifth in a series of USAID-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities activities aimed at
developing a core group of trainers at the University's International Health Institute.
Using ModCal, JHPIEGO was able to implement a 2-part approach to the course.
Ten participants worked independently to complete the CTS ModCal CD-ROM and develop individual presentations for practice and
feedback. Having worked through the ModCal on their own, participants came together for the second part of
the course, a 3-day group session to review key concepts, observe training skills in action, ask questions and present
their practice presentations and clinical demonstrations for feedback.
This 2-part approach for implementing ModCal for CTS will be
used this spring in a course in Zambia. ModCal for CTS, which is also available in JHPIEGO's computer
centers in Bolivia, Ecuador, Haiti, Kenya, Nepal, Uganda and Uzbekistan, is being translated into Bahasa for use in
Indonesia.
