Lesson 8: Prevention of Mother-to-Child
Transmission of HIV
Instructor: Jean Anderson, MD
Learning Exercise
- Try a role-play with a colleague. You play the role of counselor and let your colleague play the role of an HIV-positive woman who is being counseled about breastfeeding. Ask your colleague to imagine the woman’s personal situation and concerns about breastfeeding or not breastfeeding. Then act out the counseling session. Afterwards, please note the following items.
- How did the situation in your setting, regarding (a) cultural beliefs and practices about breastfeeding and (b) availability of alternatives to breastfeeding, influence the counseling you gave?
- What was the response of your colleague to your counseling? Did they bring up issues you had not thought about?
- How would your counseling differ if the woman had not had HIV testing?
- What resources exist in your country about prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV? Please list the title, source and date of the most readily available resources. In what ways is the information different from what you have learned in this lesson?
